<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Taking a more sporadic approach to how I interview artists, I plan nothing in advance (besides the meeting itself) - no questions, themes, or prefabricated conversation topics. It has seemingly turned into a beautiful process. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On my drive to Columbus, Ohio, en route to Travonna Coffee Shop in the Short North Art District located on High Street, I realized that these interviews entailed common themes - coffee shops, a few awkward silences, lots of smiles, good chai lattes, and more importantly, some of the most stimulating thoughts about art that even my undergraduate art theory classes couldn't fully initiate. My recent conversation with fellow Miami University graduate, Alexander Newman was no exception.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Discovering his photography through a winter open house hosted by Miami University's Art Department in the Winter/Spring of 2010 - an obsession ensued. In fact, my first purchase of fine art was Alex's <i>Self Portrait</i>, taken while attending Miami University. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was quickly apparent that Alex's interest in photography, lay in both its versatility and materiality. Switching between fashion photography, self portraiture, and night life scenes, Alex has obtained the maturity of a seasoned photographer. I particularly enjoyed our conversations about the influence that film and cinema have upon his work. He is inspired by the thought that every moment he captures will never return - to either himself, or his subject.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Since starting graduate school in art history last month, I have had the pleasure of watching his career evolve into his newest project, <a href="http://lastnitephoto.com/" target="_blank">Last Nite</a> - where through indulging himself into nightlife culture, he captures the purest moments of America's youth - in which inhibitions, cares, and worries are forfeited in an effort to encapsulate a modern-day version of Bresson's "decisive moment".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With as many interests and possibilities that Alex has, I sincerely look forward to his upcoming projects! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Located right off the red line at Cermak/Chinatown, is where I found Chicago-based artist, Connie Noyes and her spacious studio. Even with high ceilings, great views, and numerous works-in-progress - my attention was grabbed by one thing - <i>materials</i>. Moving from art therapy to photography, Noyes found her niche in the materiality of installation art.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Recognizing her move </span><span style="background-color: white;">to Chicago as the start of her use of bright pink, Noyes has effortlessly evolved as an artist of, and for, her medium. Giving much praise to 1970's artist Agnes Martin and the daily, abstract situations life puts her in - Noyes is a true eccentric, and her art is no exception. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">
Exhibiting her newest installation work at the "Chicago's Twelve: Twelve Artists Mobilizing the Earth - Garfield Park Conservatory" (with Kim Guare!) Connie is excited (and undoubtedly ready) to take her art into a new visual environment. However, from personal experience in her studio, it seems that the environment is irrelevent - as Noyes's works pull you in through intricate details, and multiple layers - sending the viewer into a chaotic, and beautiful, perceptual crisis.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
With a drive that leaves her constantly in search of more materials to fall in love with, and one of the most open-minds in contemporary art to vibrant color palettes, Noyes is not only proud of her usage of pink, but is on the hunt to encourage fellow artists and designers alike to join in as well, with her mission/blog <a href="http://onemillionpink.org/" target="_blank">onemillionpink</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
As an art historian, I am at times torn at technological advancements and their effect on art. Often, I find myself believing that the materiality of art (not its <i>content</i>) has suffered for our technophilic ways. My meeting with Connie was a humble reminder that visual artists are still concerned with their process, and materials - and I am truly grateful.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">During my weekend excursion to Chicago, I stumbled upon the excellent contemporary photography collection of the <a href="http://www.artic.edu/" target="_blank">Chicago Institute of Art</a>. One gallery in particular, housed eleven works by Dutch photographer, Rineke Dijkstra (their full collection contains 23 of her works!) - and it took my breath away. Her subdued palettes, extra-large compositions, and raw subject matter kept me mesmerized. Luckily, I was traveling with a fellow art historian, so I wasn't rushed through the process.</span></div>
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">All of the eleven works shown were an excerpt from her </span><i style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">Beach Portraits</i><span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"> series completed in the early-90s. Her subject: young, adolescent children of all genders, ages, and nationalities - making the point that the transitional awkwardness that adolescence and puberty brings is something that crosses international borders. It's a transition experienced by all - a phenomenon - a universal.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">The work of August Sanders instantly hit me as a reference point to Dijkstra's work. In favor of Dijkstra's work, I feel that she is not only seeking a universal concept, but forcing its acknowledgment as well. Sanders work, <i>Faces of Our Time</i> (which I adore) lacks an aggression, and as such - an honesty, that Dijkstra truly captures.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="background-color: white;">If you get a chance - these are a must-see.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white;">With a plethora of contemporary artists seeking to create works of art that will </span><i style="background-color: white;">sell</i><span style="background-color: white;">, rather than </span><i style="background-color: white;">speak </i><span style="background-color: white;">- Kim Guare is a unique exception. Named part of "Chicago's Twelve: 12 Artists Mobilizing the Earth", her work passionately combines raw vitality and environmental activism.</span><br />
<br />
I asked Kim to surprise me and pick one of her favorite local cafés or coffee shops - she chose Kickstand Espresso Bar in the vibrant Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. Scribbling down notes and sipping on the best espresso I have had in awhile - I started to wonder how Kim's passion for locally grown, organic food came to be, and how she could possibly construct projects that would not only connect with the viewer - but make them listen.<br />
<br />
Through visually arousing works and colorful palettes Kim attempts to reconnect us with the food we eat, and where it comes from.<br />

<a name='more'></a>Kim recalled her first time at the Roger's Park Farmer's Market: she bought spinach, spoke with the farmer she bought it from, and made herself a fresh, organic meal that evening.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
The ability to speak with those I bought my food from, and know that I was supporting them - was really special.</blockquote>
We spoke of genetically-modified corn, and genetically-modified seeds in general (which are her inspiration for her upcoming show, "Chicago's Twelve: 12 Artists Mobilizing the Earth - Garfield Park Conservatory" in which she hopes to remind viewers that seeds are priceless, and hybridization and cross-fertilization with genetically-modified seeds is becoming inevitable and dangerous.<br />
<br />
Kim introduced me to the concept of CSA - <a href="http://www.localharvest.org/csa/" target="_blank">Community Shared Agriculture</a> - where you can purchase half, or full shares from local farms (helping them with seasonal start-up costs) and in return you receive shares of their crops on a weekly basis. This week Kim received onions, kale, garlic scrapes, arugula, lettuce, chard, summer squash, garlic, and turnips from her local farm share!<br />
<br />
It is rare indeed to find an individual like Kim - whose activism is apparent through daily lifestyle, attitude, and a promising career.<br />

<span style="background-color: white;">I have always maintained a soft spot for transitional neighborhoods and communities - if you think about it, some of the most intriguing cities in the world are those under current renovation and restoration (Berlin, New York, Chicago, Istanbul). Although Berlin, Germany and Brooklyn, New York are the first two that pop into my mind - now, Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati will be a close third.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Rising above poverty, crime, and....wait for it....generational stereotypes (<i>yuck!) - </i>transitional areas often surprise you - and definitely provide a refreshing sense of hope.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">Usually offering more affordable housing, fresh farmer's markets, vintage/thrift clothing stores, up-and-coming restaurants and ambitious entrepreneurs and designers - these neighborhoods have <i>so </i>much to offer, especially to those willing to offer a helping hand.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Don't get me wrong: I am well aware that my generation embraces the so-called "hipster" movement. I have also realized that being an art historian (or anything associated with art - Thierry Guetta is absolutely NOT included here) comes with its territory of labels - most of which I'm proud to live with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
This summer, like most summers of youth, has been a growing experience: complex and uncomfortable, as well as simple and beautiful. In honor of this paradox we call "summer" I have compiled a list of things "to-try". <span style="background-color: white;">Join me if you dare.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">1. Buy a vintage bike, and actually commit to restoring it! Mine? A 1977 Schwinn Collegiate</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">2. For god's sake - PLANT something, or, lots of things.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">3. As you know from my previous post - read, read, READ.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">4. Push yourself to start random conversations (and yes, with random people).</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">5. Try to get your hands on student-ran campus publications. Mine? The Barnard Bulletin, YOTS</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">6. Go on iTunes and listen to random artists, albums, and songs - discover something new - then promote them.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white;">7. Fight for a cause. Mine? I am a feminist.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8. Speaking of feminism - take a look at this <a href="http://feministbecause.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">empowering</a> blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
9. Write a letter, ride your newly restored bike to the post office, and mail it to your best friend.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
10. Wake up at 6:30am (or sometime much earlier than normal), grab a tea, and sit outside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
11. Watch a documentary (if you're an art person and are in the mood to be left perplexed/angry, try <a href="http://www.banksyfilm.com/" target="_blank">Exit Through the Gift Shop</a> by Banksy</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
12. Stop tanning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
13. Take a weekend trip! Mine? Chicago, this weekend!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
14. Stop being so judgemental and go on a date with someone of the same sex</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
15. Type "hipster" in on <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/" target="_blank">Urban Dictionary</a> - have a good laugh, and be proud of our generation.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-902453908175666614.post-80284027839546142462012-06-25T15:40:00.002-04:002012-06-25T19:01:53.850-04:00Artist Series: Alexander Newman<br />

I am posting this announcement a little early (out of pure excitement) - during my undergraduate career as an art historian at Miami University I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with several art studio students - one of them being Alexander Newman (photography focus).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
During the Art Open House in Spring 2011, I happened across a self-portrait (NOT shown here) taken by Alex, and it shook me - in the <i>best</i> of ways. Working mostly in black & white, Alex recognizes the essence of everything he captures - especially himself.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't want to speak too soon, or say too much before our interview! Check out his great website in the mean time!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During the school year, I find it hard to truly enjoy leisure reads. Before my move to Buffalo, I pass my time by 1) working (of course) and 2) reading, reading, reading! In my architecture class last year my professor brought Edmund Burke's work on the sublime to my attention - so I just had to have it! Burke's essay is humanist (and spot on) in the purest of ways. I've come to understand (and appreciate) fear, love, and passion for all that they are - especially for what these emotions have given art.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
By far my favorite scholar of art history is Rosalind Krauss of Columbia. Her 1972 essay in Artforum "A View of Modernism" still gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. </div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"He wants to be Velázquez so he paints <i>stripes</i>"</blockquote>
<i>Under Blue Up</i> discusses what Krauss coins as the, "post-medium condition" where she believes that the medium of any work has moved from being <i>absolute</i> to <i>obsolete </i>as a result of postmodernism. Definitely a worthy read (especially if you're heading to graduate school)!<br />
<br />
Read, and enjoy!<br />

<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">Recently graduating with a degree in Communications and a natural eye for bohemian, yet tailored street-style, Cincinnati-native Kat Cooper has developed a personal/street style blog with Sam Bates (New York) - <a href="http://www.batesandcooper.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Bates and Cooper</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: large;">Upon purchasing my olive green jogger pants from <a href="http://us.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/TopCategoriesDisplay?storeId=13052&catalogId=33060" target="_blank">Topshop</a>- I sent Kat a quick message asking for style advice for my upcoming trip to Chicago. Within a day I had an email with an exquisite portfolio of options (one even named after me, how lucky!):</span><br />
